Viscoelastic additives should also reduce differential evaporation, the process by which more volatile fuel components evaporate more rapidly than less volatile components. By reducing diffusion coefficients, viscoelasticity keeps volatile components at the droplet surface from being replenished from within the droplet, forcing the fuel to evaporate more uniformly. Since more volatile components typically have a lower Cetane number, reducing differential evaporation should increase the effective fuel Cetane number.
